Troubleshooting Guide

This page provides an overview of common issues and their solutions in PyADM1ODE. Detailed troubleshooting guides can be found in the respective component documentation.

Overview

PyADM1ODE is a complex system with biological, energy, and mechanical components. Problems can occur in various areas:

Installation and Setup

For installation issues, see:

→ Installation Guide - Troubleshooting Section

Common topics: - C# DLL files not found - pythonnet import errors - Mono/.NET Framework issues - First import delays - Module attribute errors

Biological Processes

Digester Issues

For diagnosis and resolution of biological process problems, see:

→ Biological Components - Troubleshooting Section

Covered topics:

Low pH Value

  • Causes: High organic loading rate (OLR), insufficient buffer capacity
  • Diagnosis: pH < 6.8, rising VFA
  • Solutions: Reduce OLR, add lime buffer, adjust substrate mix

Foaming

  • Causes: High protein content, pH changes, high VFA
  • Solutions: Reduce protein-rich substrates, stabilize pH

Low Gas Production

  • Causes: Low OLR, poor substrate quality, inhibition, short HRT
  • Diagnosis Tools: Specific gas production, check methane content
  • Solutions: Improve substrate quality, identify inhibitors

Process Monitoring

→ Biological Components - Process Monitoring

Key process indicators: - pH value: 6.8-7.5 optimal - VFA/TAC ratio: < 0.4 - Methane content: > 55% - Temperature stability

Energy System

CHP and Heating Systems

For energy component issues, see:

→ Energy Components - Troubleshooting Section

Covered topics:

CHP Not Running

  • Diagnosis: Gas availability, minimum gas demand, check storage pressure
  • Solutions: Ensure gas supply, adjust storage pressure

Excessive Venting

  • Cause: Gas production > CHP consumption
  • Solutions:
  • Increase CHP capacity
  • Add a second CHP
  • Enlarge gas storage

Insufficient Heat

  • Diagnosis: High auxiliary heating demand
  • Solutions: Improve insulation, enlarge CHP, reduce digester temperature

Mechanical Components

Pump and Mixer Issues

For mechanical component problems, see:

→ Mechanical Components - Troubleshooting Section

Covered topics:

Pump Delivers Insufficient Flow

  • Diagnosis: Efficiency, pressure head, sizing check
  • Solutions: Increase pump size, reduce friction losses, check for blockages

Mixer Consumes Too Much Energy

  • Diagnosis: Specific power > 6.0 W/m³
  • Solutions: Enable intermittent operation, reduce intensity

Poor Mixing Quality

  • Diagnosis: Mixing quality < 0.7, long mixing time
  • Solutions: Increase intensity, extend on-time, larger mixer blade

Feeding System

Storage and Dosing Issues

For feeding component problems, see:

→ Feeding Components - Troubleshooting Section

Covered topics:

Rapid Quality Loss

  • Diagnosis: Quality factor < 0.95 with short storage time
  • Solutions: Improve storage type, reduce temperature, faster use

Feeder Blockages

  • Diagnosis: Frequent blockages (> 5)
  • Solutions: Choose more robust feeder type, improve substrate preparation

Inconsistent Dosing

  • Diagnosis: Average dosing error > 10%
  • Solutions: Consider more precise feeder type, check calibration

Simulation and Performance

Simulation Issues

For general simulation problems, see:

→ Quickstart Guide - Troubleshooting Section

Covered topics:

Simulation Unstable

  • Symptoms: pH drops, VFA rises, methane production decreases
  • Solutions: Reduce substrate feed rate, increase retention time, add buffer material

Low Gas Production

  • Solutions: Increase substrate feed, check degradability, optimize temperature

Slow Simulation

  • Solutions: Increase time step (dt), reduce save_interval, use parallel simulation
